A clarion call has gone to landlords, caretakers and occupants of Abakaliki metropolis to support the programmes and policies of the present administration in making Ebonyi State the most beautiful city in the Country by planting trees and ornamental flowers in their premises.
The Commissioner for Environment, Comrade Jonah Egba made the call during the flag off campaign of tree planting in Abakaliki.
While stressing on the importance of trees in environment, Comrade Egba noted that it was the directive of the Governor Engr. David Nweze Umahi for trees and ornamental flowers to be planted in every streets of Abakaliki.
According to the Commissioner, apart from beautification, tree also gives life to environment. He encouraged the good people of Ebonyi state to rise up to the challenge of planting trees in their premises to protect the environment from degradation.
His words, “We are calling on the landlords, caretakers and inhabitants of every yard in Abakaliki capital city to wake up and do the needful. We want every premise to identify with tree planting.”
The Environmental Marshals will go round the street to enforce the directive of his Excellency whose vision is to make Abakaliki the most beautiful city in the Country and we are going to support him to actualize the vision” he added.
In his remarks, the House of Assembly member representing Ikwo South constituency and the House chairman committee on Environment, Hon Moses Odunwa described the exercise as annual rituals that is not supposed to be played with because the importance of trees in our environment cannot be overemphasized.
Hon Odunwa appealed to the inhabitants of Abakaliki City to see trees as a common value and appreciate its existence by taking care of it.
Hon Odunwa said, “My advice to the people is that there will be a change of character towards the trees. They should see these trees as common value, it is not just for government. Everybody should appreciate the existence of these trees so that you don’t just match it. If you see any stray animals destroying it, chase it away or take the animal to the ministry of Environment” he said.
The state commandant Environmental Marshals, Dr Lazarus Nwachukwu who said the Governor has done a lot in terms of beautifying the city, called on Ebonyians to give the vision a laudable support.
He however promised to work in synergy with the ministry to ensure compliance and implementation of the exercise.
