One Death, Two Burial Dates

Ex-Council Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, Hon. Ogbonnaya Oko-Enyim has issued a different date for burial of his father even as his younger sister who is the incumbent council boss gave a different date.

Late Simon Oko-Enyim, father of the duo who held the title of Omezue, the highest traditional title in entire Afikpo clan died at 85 years of age on 25th day of February 2020.

According to burial poster prepared by the ex-council boss who is the eldest son of the family, wake and burial was fixed for 7th and 8th April, 2021, while the younger sister in radio announcement fixed burial of same person on 8th day of May 2021.

The situation has heightened the tension in the Oko-Enyim dynasty, the local government and entire state, a situation people fear may result to bloodbath, if the family is not called to order.

In a statement by the incumbent Council Chairman Barr. Oby Oko-Enyim which was also announced on radio, she warned against parading another date other than 8th day of May, 2021 for same burial which in her words could cause breach of public peace.

Barr Oby Oko-Enyim opined thus: “Following series of calls from different quarters as regards the burial of our Father, Late Omezue S.O Enyim, members of the public are by this announcement informed that the family in collaboration with the Omezue Title Holders and other Traditional Groups in Amasiri has scheduled the funeral of the late sage to hold on the 8th of May 2021.

“Any person or group of persons parading any other date as regards the burial is on a mission to create disaffection and tension which could cause a breach of public peace.

“Law enforcement agencies have therefore been alerted on this clandestine move of some persons to hold burial of our late father contrary to the family agreement and they are on ground to arrest and prosecute any one found culpable in the matter.

“Friends of the family as well as members of the Public are enjoined to be guided by this announcement and disregard the purported burial holding today Wednesday 7th (wake keep) and tomorrow Thursday 8th April 2021 as there is nothing like that” – Hon. Barr Oby Oko Enyim, Executive Chairman, Afikpo North Local Government Area.”

Recall that Ogbonnaya Oko-Enyim, the ex-council chairman recently resigned from Governor Umahi’s government as Special Assistant to the State Governor on Schools Monitoring claiming displeasure at the Governor’s preference of his younger sister, Oby Oko-Enyim, to him.

The incumbent local government chairman is a staunch member of All Progressive Congress (APC), the new party of the governor.
