Man, 32 Remanded For Killing 3 Policemen in Ebonyi

Nigeria Police, Ebonyi State Command has arraigned a 32 years ago man, Mr. Bernard Nwoji, before a Magistrate Court sitting in Abakaliki for allegedly killing 3 policemen.

Bernard Nworji was arraigned recently on seven-count charges in the suit numbered MAB/287c/2021 hinging on murder, armed robbery, malicious damage and cultism.

During the arraignment, the trial Magistrate ordered remand of the suspect in Abakaliki Correctional centre for lack of competent jurisdiction and directed transfer of all documents and evidences in the matter to department of public prosecution (DPP) for further prosecution.

The letters of the suit stated: “That you Bernard Nworji ‘m’ and others now at large on the 14th day of April, 2021, at Nwezenyi Izzi, in the jurisdiction of this honourable court did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit: murder/armed robbery/malicious damage/ cultism and thereby committed offence punishable under section 516A(a) of criminal code cap 33 volume 1 laws of Ebonyi state of Nigeria,2009.

“That you Bernard Nworji ‘m’ and others now at large on the same date and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did murder one Inspector Light Alphonsus ‘m’ , Sergeant Egwu Emmanuel and Sergeant Igwe Emeka ‘m’ by shooting them with a gun and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 319(1) of the criminal code cap 33 volume 1 laws of Ebonyi of Nigeria,2009.

“That you Bernard Nworji ‘m’ and others now at large on the same date and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did arm yourselves with guns and rob three AK 47 rifles valued four million, five hundred thousand naira (4,500,000.00) property of Nigeria Police Force and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 402 of the criminal code cap 33 volume 1 laws of Ebonyi state of Nigeria,2009.

“That you Bernard Nworji ‘m’ and others now at large on the same date and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did willfully and maliciously damaged two patrol vehicles with registration number NPF-1781-D and NPF-2473-D valued forty-four million naira (44,000,000,00) property of the Nigeria police force and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 451of the criminal code cap 33 volume 1 laws of Ebonyi state of Nigeria,2009.

“That Bernard Nworji ‘m’ and others now at large on the same date and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did belong to a secret cult group known as “Baggers confraternity” and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 3(1)(3) and 4(1) punishable under section 5 of Ebonyi State law prohibiting secret cult activities and carrying of offensive weapons in Ebonyi State cap 12 volume 1 laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009″.

Recall that the police men killed were attached to Safer Highway patrol team and were shot dead while on duty by unknown gunmen at Nwaezenyi Junction axis of Izzi Local Government Area, Abakaliki suburban.

The gunmen were said to be in a convoy disguising to be mourners, but on getting to the police check point at Nwaezenyi where they were flagged down, they immediately opened fire on the policemen killing two and later killed another officer, set police van ablaze on the same road.
