Kill Police Kill Inspector
By Esther Nworie
Unidentified gunmen, Wednesday, at about 8 p.m. invaded a police station at Obiozara, in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and killed an inspector of police identified as Abba O. Inalegwu and freed suspects from the cell.
The unknown gunmen numbering about 15, also set the office of the DPO ablaze before leaving the scene, while they made away with AK47 rifle belonging to the deceased inspector.
According to a top security source who spoke off-record, the hoodlums also released five suspects from the police detention facility.
He added that the gunmen destroyed vital documents in the administration department of the station while looking for arms and ammunition.
The source said, “They also torched five vehicles; three of which are exhibits and the other two vehicles belonging to police officers serving in the station.
The hoodlums who came in through Obiozara-Isu road on a motorcycle and unmarked vehicles, first shot sporadically making the vigilante stationed at the local government council to scamper for safety before proceeding to the station after which they escaped through Okposi-Uburu Road, Ohaozara LGA.
“The hoodlums used locally manufactured petrol bomb which usually catches fire after the explosion to set ablaze the vehicles and the admin office on fire,” he narrated.
There have been series of attacks on police facilities in Ebonyi. Over ten policemen have been killed during the operation, while their rifles were carted away by the gunmen.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Ebonyi State Command granted interview on this:
What really happened at the police station?
The attackers came in yesterday Thursday at the early hours of 6th May, 2021. But they were immediately repelled. In the process, we gunned down one of them. But we also lost a police man. And frantic effort is on to arrest the perpetrator.
Are there no injuries at all appart from the casualties you mentioned?
No, there’s no injuries, immediately they came into the police station they were reppelled immediately.
Were they armed with superior weapons?
The same type, Ak47 riffle, like our men. It was really a gun battle. That was why they killed a police officer. But we also gunned down one of them.
My concern is that this is not the first time this is happening, not only in Ebonyi State but many other places. Police stations are now centers of attack by people who you now describe as bandits or hoodlums, and it seems to be just going on and on and on. What do you think is responsible for this and how is it to be tackled?
I think everything is as a result of END SARS, the aftermath of end SARS because the now feel that end SARS had given them opportunity to attack police station then, and they are now continuing. But we will not relent in our efforts to continue repelling them and ensure that we are safe to enable us protect other community members. We only want confidence from the public. We want encouragement from the government so that we’ll be able to fight these bandits and ensure our country is safe again; especially Ebonyi State where we had a very peaceful environment earlier. But today it’s just a different thing all together. So we just want morale boosting from the government. In fact we are back to our feet really, we’re counting on your own support.
You don’t keep saying let’s go for this, let’s go for that, let’s go for village policing-what we want from you is to help us serve you better, to tell the public we can still do it with your support.
If the people from Obiozara can help us with useful information to enable us arrest these perpetrators. The other people that may want to do it next time will think twice because they’ll know there will not be any safe haven for them.Follow us
