Court Sentences Teenager To One Month Jail For Stealing

A Magistrate court sitting in Abakaliki has sentenced a teenager to one month jail without option of fine for stealing.

The teenager (name with held) aged 17 years was accused of stealing phones and HP laptop on the 28th day of April, 2021, belonging to two persons at Nwike Street in Abakaliki metropolis.

During his arraignment in court recently, the 17 years old defendant pleaded guilty to the charges and attributed it to have be caused by the devil and pleaded for mercy.

Having pleaded guilty, the defence counsel, Solomon Eguji Esq, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy by giving his client lesser punishment considering his honesty to the court by pleading guilty.

Pronouncing the judgment, the trial Magistrate, Lilian Onu, after considering the matter and the plea taken by the defendant, sentenced him to one month jail without option of fine.

The charge read: “That you (name withheld by us) ‘M’ on the 28th day of April, 2021, at Nwike Street Abakaliki in the Abakaliki magistrial district did steal an infinix hot 5 phone valued (N40,000) forty thousand naira and an Itel phone valued thirty five thousand naira (N35,000) total value seventy five thousand naira (75,000) property of one Godson Ifechukwu ‘f’ and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 390 of the criminal code cap 33 volume 1 laws of Ebonyians state of Nigeria,2009.

“That you (name withheld by us) ‘m’ on the same date, place and in the aforementioned magisterial district did steal a HP laptop valued eight five thousand naira (N85,000) property of one Eze Chinedu ‘m’ and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 390 of criminal code cap 33 volume 1 laws of Ebonyi state of Nigeria,2009.”
