By Johnpaul Nwotsa

Friday, May 8, 2021 remained a special day in the lives of Miss Perpetua Ozioma Ovuoba and David Ijeogu as they exchanged their marital vows at the altar of God in the presence of priests and Catholic faithful.

David had lived and was trained by Rev. Fr. Raymond Ifeanyichukwu Ezeonu of the blessed memory, while Perpetua was trained by Fr. Nwizi.

The holy matrimony which took place at St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Eguhuo Ezzagu in Ishielu L.G.A of Ebonyi State, attracted a good number of priests and religious in Abakaliki Diocese and Catholic faithful.

Rev. Fr. Gilbert Joe N. Akam (a.k.a Fr. Nwizi), the chief celebrant of the Holy Eucharist, in his welcoming speech, thanked God as he has made it possible that Perpetua and David would be joined as husband and wife.

Fr. Akam also extended his greetings to his colleague priests and Catholic faithful for making themselves available to witness the holy matrimony between Perpetua and David.

He therefore prayed God to bless everyone that were present for the ceremony.

Rev. Fr. Dr. Mathias Omaka, the homilist told Perpetua and David that would be joined as husband and wife that Sacrament of Matrimony is a lasting and total commitment of a man and a woman to live as husband and wife, and not only as husband and wife but to see each other as one body till death do you part.

In addition, Fr. Omaka told Perpetua and David that in marriage, the couple weds themselves and not the priest wed them, rather priests and lay persons are just witnesses of the Holy Matrimony.

Fr. Omaka further noted that marriage and the Christian family call for a moral commitment.

“It is not an easy way of Christian life. Marriage is a long path toward sanctification. Marriage is a way to achieve holiness when we consider some of the advice the Bible gives us about living the Christian life, we can understand how marriage can indeed be a path to sanctification.”

Jesus said that to follow him, we must be servants, and marriage is a life of service to one’s spouse and children.

“And St. Paul said, there are three things that last: faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love.

“Marriage is a commitment to love one’s spouse until death.

In conclusion, Fr. Omaka advised Perpetua and David that are to be wedded that they should hold high the esteem for the wonderful dignity and grace of the Sacrament of Marriage.

“Prepare earnestly for it. Believe in the spiritual power which this Sacrament of Jesus Christ gives to strengthen the marriage union, and to overcome all the crises and problems of life together.

During the Holy Mass, Miss Perpetua Ozioma Ovuoba and Mr. David Ijeogu exchanged their marital vows and promised to live in peace as husband and wife till death do them part and they were immediately declared as Mr. & Mrs. David Ijeogu by Rev. Fr. Gilbert N. Akam who performed the marriage rites.

In appreciation, Rev. Fr. Malachy Arinzechukwu Nkannebe, the Parish Priest of St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Eguhuo Ezzagu thanked God for the fulfillment of the wedding between Perpetua and David.

Fr. Malachy also welcomed his colleague priests which include; Rev. Fr. Akam Gilbert, Rev. Fr. Dr. Mathias Omaka, Rev. Fr. RichardMary Igwe, Rev. Fr. Matthew Umoke, Rev. Fr. David Elom, Rev. Fr. Livinus Nweke, Rev. Fr. Francis Nkama, Rev. Fr. James Nwofoke, the Religious and the Catholic faithful that were able to make it despite the far distance and prayed God to bless them, especially the wedded couple, Mr. & Mrs. David Ijeogu.

Speaking with Citizens’ Advocate reporter, Rev. Fr. Gilbert Joe N. Akam, the Parish Priest of Emmanuel parish Edukwu-Achi, thanked God for making the solemnization of holy matrimony between Perpetua and David a reality.

Fr. Akam confirmed that David had lived and was trained by Rev. Fr. Raymond Ifeanyichukwu Ezeonu of the blessed memory, while Perpetua was trained by him (Fr. Nwizi) and how they came together to take vows and live as husband and wife according to the catholic tradition was a miraculous one.

Fr. Akam therefore prayed God to make their marriage fruitful and never allow them to go astray in time of trial.

He equally advised them to never allow a third party to come into their lives in order not to put crises in their family.

On the part of the wedded couple, Mr. and Mrs. David Ijeogu, appreciated God for his kindness and love towards them that their coming together to live as husband and wife is a divine one from God as both of them had lived with Rev. Fr. Gilbert Akam (Fr. Nwizi) and Rev. Fr. Raymond Ifeanyichukwu Ezeonu of the blessed memory.

According to Perpetua and David, we prayed God to bless all those that honoured our invitation, especially Fr. Akam Gilbert and Fr. Ezeonu of the blessed memory and asked for God’s blessings and mercy to enable them live as husband and wife and fight any battle that may come on their way.
