A group, the Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Ebonyi State chapter, has accused desperate politicians of masterminding the burning of INEC offices to rig the 2023 general elections.

Comrade Jeremiah Oyibe Secretary of the Committee in the state, in a statement, on the burning of the INEC office in the Izzi Local Government Area of the state, alleged that some desperate politicians have been doing everything possible to rig the 2023 polls to their favour.

He regretted that the destruction of the Permanent Voters Card as a result of the burning of the INEC offices may disenfranchise a large number of voters in the general election and called the National Chairman of the commission to ensure that no voter was disenfranchised at the polls.

The statement, “Committee for the Defence of Human Rights CDHR Ebonyi state branch condemn in the strongest term the burning of INEC office in Izzi Local Government of Ebonyi State and asked INEC not to disfranchise citizens because of burnt voters card.

“Burning of INEC offices across Nigeria is a desperate plan by some politicians to rig the 2023 election by disenfranchising citizens from performing their constitutional rights and by that allow them to install their preferred candidate against the general interest of the masses.

“We have observed that some INEC offices across the country where sensitive materials including Permanent Voters Card (PVCs) are kept are now target points for destruction to deprive citizens of performing their constitutional rights and thereby allowing them to massively rig the forthcoming election.

“The destruction of the undetermined number of voters’ card in the largest and most populated local government in Ebonyi state is politically motivated to disfranchise citizens and people will resist such an unholy move.

“We however call on INEC chairman Mahmoud Yakubu to ensure that no citizen is disfranchised because of the burnt PVC since the biometrics is already captured and can be validated during the voting, there is no good reason to deny any citizen of exercising their constitutional right”, he stated.
